Playfulness is a quality in all of us so what can we do with it? A lot. For starters, we can simply enjoy the engagement and have fun. But to define something as a game we need objectives, stories and gameplay to support the experience. A game provides us with a new world we have to assimilate in order to play it. And if the experience is fun it helps us to engage — and through this even promote experiential learning.

Can the challenges in a game also be a part of a learning process? Games are an excellent medium for conceptualizing and systemizing complex subjects. Part of Noise Games has worked together with scientists in creating powerful tools for learning. These game projects have provided us with a skillset of working in multidisciplinary environments with experts of various fields. There is an increasing interest for collaborations between educators, scientists and the games industry.

In what ways can games promote learning? By self-analysis players become more conscious of their thought processes through internal reflection. Systemic games show the players the functioning of complex systems. Communication and collaboration in games examine realities we observe and experience in society and in communicating with others.
